What’s a ‘Hoodia’?

Posted by Non-Hamster on September 23rd, 2007

"Hoodia", It's a word I've seen a lot over the last year or so and I guess I've never bothered paying much attention to it.  Instead I'd just do what thousands of others do every day and hit "delete".  It was only recently that I bothered to pay any attention to what it was.  Mostly out of curiosity.. you know the kind, a thing just gets under your skin and bugs you until you look it up.  Well, that's what happened with hoodia, I just had to look up what the heck it.

It turns out that what they're calling 'hoodia' is Hoodia Gordonii, a plant that looks like a cactus and is alleged to have a natural appetite suppressant in it.  Well, I am not a hamster, given a claim like that I can easily see why people would try to market the thing to death.  It's just too easy to treat something like a 'magic bullet'... and it's obvious that something is working, otherwise the spammers would have dropped it and gone on to another product.
