Why Don't We Hear Anything About Big Tobacco Anymore?

Posted by Non-Hamster on March 30th, 2010

Something occurred to me today kinda out of the blue.  It seems to me that it's been rather quite a long time since I've heard anything significant about "Big Tobacco".  I know that they're still in business and the big lawsuit of several years ago has long since faded out of the news.  I also know that addiction to their products has caused many people to discover much higher prices on their insurance quote because of having been addicted to cigarettes for years.

Then there was a news story back in 2006 about how nicotine levels in most brands were up something like ten percent over what they were a few years earlier.  I'd post a link to the story but it has long since fallen off of the ABC News site where I originally found it.

It's pretty obvious what was going on.  Tobacco companies were taking a hit because of lawsuits and campaigns to get people to quit, or better yet, not start.  So what did they do?  They increased the level of nicotine.  Why?  Because nicotine is the substance in tobacco that causes the addiction.  By having more of it they're acting to keep the addicts they have and have a little easier time getting new ones.

I wonder now as I did then, why is it that we never heard much about this in mainstream news?  why is it that there wasn't a lot of noise, upsets and lawsuits over this?

I guess big tobacco bought more than just lawyers & nicotine increasing research didn't they?
