That's right. A guy in Farmington, Mo is facing this incredible sentence because he stole a 50 cent doughnut and pushed a clerk out of his way as he made his getaway. Prosecutors are treating the push as an assault and that changes a misdemeanor shoplifting charge into a "strong-armed robbery" which could put him away for five to fifteen years. Next they add in the guy's past history and all of a sudden he's facing 30 to life for stealing a doughnut.
I am not a hamster, you're not going to make me think that there's anything right with this. If anything it makes the prosecutor look kinda anal to say the least. Even if the guy *IS* a loser ten or twelve times over who NEEDS to be in jail I think that they'd be better off getting something that won't be laughed out of court. Not to mention how bad it makes the prosecutors office look.
One person who commented on the story summed it up nicely:
50 cents will get you 30 years of incarceration at taxpayer expense. 30 years x $65,000 per year = 2 MILLION DOLLARS. Let''s be clear- you and I are going to pay 2 MILLION DOLLARS to incarcerate a non-violent 2-bit petty criminal. If you can''t see the problem with this, then you ARE the problem.
