Unscheduled, Involuntary Reboots

Posted by Non-Hamster on August 5th, 2008

There’s a thing about rebooting the computer that I don’t care for. It takes time. Quite a bit of time in fact. No, I am not a hamster, I understand that system services take a few seconds each to get started and so on. I also get that by running a mail server I have that to wait for as well.

In addition to that I’ve got a few other things that have to start up on reboot and tend to slow things down until everything’s stable. It’s easy to see why I prefer to go as long as I can between reboots. These days I usually go anywhere from 4 to 14 days uptime before I have to reboot.

What really gripes me bad however is those times that, for reasons unknown, the system just reboots apparently on it’s own without my say so. I guess it’s a windoze thing since I’ve never heard of a linux box doing it.
