Story Idea Generators Are All Crap

Posted by Non-Hamster on July 7th, 2012

If, like me, you write on the web in a blog, commercial site or whatever else you know that awful feeling of sitting in front of an empty editor screen with no inspiration for anything at all whatsoever.

This dreaded condition known as "writer's block" is the bane of all written creativity anywhere.  It has halted more good stories and articles of all kinds than the total accumulated number of children that have been born since Adam's first son.

In this modern computerized age many frustrated writers turn to an assortment of online tools to help them past this insidious creativity halting condition.

In fact some absolutely swear by these tools, especially "story idea generators".

I cannot for the life of me understand why.

In the last decade I have had countless attacks of writer's block and every once in a while I get so desperate for inspiration that I once again go looking for some kind of "idea generator" in an effort to kick-start the writing process.

I have YET to find one that was worth the bandwidth required to load it in my web browser.

They're all basically the same.  Some javascript taking one or more lists of boilerplate words and phrases and putting them together randomly and presenting it as a "story idea".

The results are as inane as they are stupid.  How anyone can gain inspiration from this nonsense is beyond me.

Yet in the future I'll still look for new ones, hoping against hope that I will eventually find one that is actually worth more than a pail of steaming snot.

However I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen either.
