Little Things Make Big Differences

Posted by Non-Hamster on June 9th, 2013

Harry had a problem with his new car.  Ok, it wasn't "New" new, it was new to him.  A used car that, on initial inspection at the used car lot, looked very much like it was in excellent condition.

Harry did test drive it and have a mechanic give it a once over to make sure there was nothing major wrong and it passed with flying colors.

It wasn't until a week after he bought it that harry started having a serious problem.  One morning he started up and pulled out of his driveway on the way to work and both of the front tires simply fell off.

He ended up having a neighbor give him a ride to work.  When he got home he called the mechanic and arranged to have the car towed in to find out why the wheels fell off and hopefully fix it.

The mechanic spent a while looking things over in great detail and came back to tell Harry that it was the strangest thing he'd ever seen.  Apparently somewhere in the assembly that keeps the wheels on, in addition to things like lug nuts & such, there was a cotter pin missing on each side.  This guaranteed that they'd not stay on for long.  It was also something that a pre-buy inspection would never find because you'd have to remove a bunch of stuff to spot it.

Just to be sure, Harry had him check the rear wheels as well.
