Who remembers Caddyshack with Bill Murray? Well, I do and it's the first thing I thought of when I read this story about a couple guys in Alberta Canada that were on a mission to kill gophers.
Like Murray's character in the movie, they decided to go high tech and use a device called a "Rodenator". The way this works is to pump a mixture of propane and oxygen down into the gopher hole and then ignite it. The difference here is that he used C-4 instead.
They managed to successfully do eight gopher holes and then they overfilled one. Fire flashed out of the gopher hole and ignited the dry grass. 160 acres of land and some outbuildings were burned as a result.
This is just another fine example of people not bothering to think about the potential consequences of their actions. I am not a hamster, setting off propane - oxygen fires in gopher holes in a field of dry grass doesn't sound very bright to me, but then I'm funny that way.
