I got another one of those "Breaking News" items the other day. This one came from FoxNews but I also got similar "Breaking News" announcements from ABC news, CBS news and at least one other.
It announced in screaming all-caps:
JURY RULES DEATHS OF PRINCESS DIANA, DODI FAYED UNLAWFULLY CAUSED BY RECKLESS ACTIONS OF DRIVER, PAPARAZZI
For the moment lets leave aside the fact of how incredibly ridiculous a statement it is or that a judge was required to hear a case and issue a ruling that drew the above conclusion.
Instead, think for a minute and see if you can come up with even one good reason for it to be labeled "Breaking News" as if it was something urgent. Mind you I am not a hamster, it's probably quite important to the parties involved, especially if somebody stands a chance of being prosecuted for it. That still doesn't change the fact that this hardly qualifies as something that needs to be urgently screamed to tens of thousands of email recipients.
At the *very* least, they could lay off the all-caps, there's certainly no need to shout about it.
