FireFox Pushing IE Out

Posted by Non-Hamster on June 27th, 2008

I was looking at my Statcounter logs today and I noticed something interesting.  Despite Microsoft's long standing claim to superior numbers of people using it's IE browsers, it's no longer even close to being the number one browser in use anymore.

What made me decide to look was an article on about how firefox's new version 3.0 browser hit the 20 million download mark in only a week.  I am not a hamster and neither am I a stats expert but I do believe that 20 Million downloads in a week is definitely one for the books.

Anyway.  I took a look at what Statcounter had to say about the browsers used by visitors to this blog.  I realize that one blog isn't a serious sampling but I've other blogs and websites that are showing similar numbers.

Number Perc. Browser Version
282 56.40% Firefox 2.0.0
93 18.60% Firefox 3.0
77 15.40% MSIE 7.0
25 5.00% MSIE 6.0
4 0.80% Unknown
4 0.80% Firefox 1.5.0
3 0.60% Firefox 3.0b5
3 0.60% Safari 1.2
2 0.40% Mozilla 4.0
2 0.40% Mozilla 5.0
1 0.20% MSIE 5.5
1 0.20% MSIE 4.01
1 0.20% Firefox 2.0
1 0.20% K-Meleon 1.1.5
1 0.20% Firefox 3.0b4

As you can see, Firefox users are by far the majority and from what I read in the article mentioned above and another one on Ars Technica, IE's days are finally numbered, with Firefox coming out the clear winner.

yeah, my blog stats are much the same, however i think that its due to the fact that the audience that reads these types of blogs are more tech savy, however according to firefox is actually doing pretty damn good.

btw nice site, keep up the good work.

That’s entirely likely.  I’m going to have to check on similar stats for some blogs I know that aren’t more about tech than anything else (not that This one IS.) and see what they show.

In either case, IE is definitely on the decline!
