What's With The Suits?

Posted by Non-Hamster on August 10th, 2008

I was watching last night when Michael Phelps won his first gold for the '08 Olympics and not only is this guy a really impressive swimmer, he's apparently got a real shot at another 6 or 7 gold medals.  Shades of Mark Spitz.

Somewhere along the line It occurred to me to notice what people were wearing.  I am not a hamster but I have to say that I think some of the uniform choices are kinda ironic.  For example the swim teams, both mens and womens, are wearing suits that are designed for function. They're intended to streamline the swimmer as much as possible to get them moving through the water as fast as possible.  It's not really designed for appearance at all.

Then there's the Beach volleyball competition.  The mens teams were wearing t-shirts and swim trunks ... I don't get why because there's no swimming in Beach Volleyball.  The Womens teams on the other hand seemed to go out of their way to feature sexy swimwear.  Again, I don't get the reason for this, there's no swimming involved, they weren't even on a real beach.
