A Trip Down Memory Lane

Posted by Non-Hamster on October 13th, 2009

I got an email today that pointed out some serious failings of the generation that's just starting college this fall.  I read it through a couple of times and since I am not a hamster I just HAD to add a few of my own and share the expanded list here.

Most people starting college this fall were born in 1992.
They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
They don't remember Skylab.
They don't remember a world without AIDS.
They cannot imagine not being able to get an insurance quote in minutes online.
They cannot imagine a world without Facebook and MySpace.
They don't remember 8-bit computers.
The CD-ROM was introduced two years before they were born.
They have no idea what a "Record" or "8-Track Tape" is.
They have always had an answering machine.
They have always had satellite or cable tv.
They had cellular telephones since they were ten or tweleve, sometimes earlier.
Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
They've never heard of Johnny Carson.
Popcorn has always been popped in a microwave oven.
The don't know Jonny Depp's first role was "Glen" in the first Nightmare on Elm St. or that his character ended up as several gallons of sticky red goo.
They wouldn't recognize the Marlboro Man if he introduced himself.
They never taken a swim and thought about Jaws.
They don't know who Mork was or where he came from.
They never heard classic gems like "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", "de plane Boss, de plane", or "It's gonna be lonely up there on the moon Alice!".
McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.
They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Now it's your turn to travel down memory lane.  In the comments below add your suggestions for inclusion on this list.  Let's see how clueless we can make the younger generation feel *cackle*

Did you know that if they re-did it today adjusting the price for inflation he’d be the $19,592,580.37 dollar man (in 2008 dollars)?  [source: the inflation calculator: http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi

They have no idea who Bozo the clown is.
They have never heard the slogan for Burger King that used to say “Have it your way”.
They’ve never heard the phrase “Flick my Bic”.
They’ve never heard the Dr. Pepper song.
They have never heard “Bet ‘cha can’t eat just one” about Lays potato chips.
They don’t know that Calgon is the ancient Chinese secret.

Man, I could totally go on and on and on…LOL
Does this mean that I am old?!
    *gasp!*

They’ve never seen a rotary-dial phone and have no idea that phone numbers used to start with 2 letters: KL5-2399

Those yokel do not know what a yokel is.
They do not know the Alka-Seltzer song.
They might not even remember – please don’t squeeze the Charmin.
They never heard ‘O can’t believe I ate the WHOLE thing – or even what the ‘thing’ was.
They might not remember the Soviet Union.
They won’t know about the ‘Missiles of October’.
A fall out shelter would make them think of sleep.
They won’t recognize that Afghanistan might turn into another Viet Nam war.
They might not realize that their rights are fewer than they used to be.
